glass was an elegant and hygienic material for domestic use and was, because of the 19th C increase of pressed - glass production, available in an increasingly attractive range of functional shapes. Open salt were needed for free flowing salt was not generally available until around 1900. bread & butter plates were required for most meals, in shape of square, oblong, round and oval dishes of various sizes were made to accommodate tinned fish assorted meats straight from the differently shaped tins, and cold salads, hard boiled eggs and cheese straws.
